Tanzania 2: The Serengeti

tanz_serengeti1/pic010.jpg
Here's the 4x4 about to enter the Serengeti park.
tanz_serengeti1/pic005.jpg
Some ostriches
tanz_serengeti1/pic008.jpg
One of the first of the "exciting" (ie non-gazelle-like) animals we saw.
tanz_serengeti1/pic014.jpg
The tops of some hippopotamuses relaxing in a pool.
tanz_serengeti1/pic016.jpg
A lone buffalo, lounging around under a tree.
tanz_serengeti1/pic018.jpg
Baby baboon!
tanz_serengeti1/pic025.jpg
A close-up crocodile. We kept well inside the car for this one.
tanz_serengeti1/pic026.jpg
Apparently they open their mouths to help keep cool.
tanz_serengeti1/pic031.jpg
Another hippo colony
tanz_serengeti1/pic033.jpg
These lions were just sitting in the road; cars had to drive around them to get past.
tanz_serengeti1/pic038.jpg
A few giraffes having a munch.
tanz_serengeti1/pic040.jpg
Push-me-pull-you giraffe
tanz_serengeti1/pic041.jpg
Even better than a zebra crossing!
tanz_serengeti1/pic042.jpg
Caught at an awkward moment, by the look of it.
tanz_serengeti1/pic047.jpg
Tricia and Brian looking at an elephant during our lunch break.
tanz_serengeti1/pic058.jpg
The elephant in question, if you look closely.
tanz_serengeti1/pic048.jpg
A cardamom plant in flower.
tanz_serengeti1/pic054.jpg
A closer buffalo. They look very solid.
tanz_serengeti1/pic059.jpg
A smaller reptile; a monitor lizard.
tanz_serengeti1/pic060.jpg
Another giraffe, not making good use of its tall reach.
tanz_serengeti1/pic061.jpg
It's almost like he's wearing tennis shoes...
tanz_serengeti1/pic065.jpg
A very hot lion.
tanz_serengeti1/pic066.jpg
The rest of the lion's pride.
tanz_serengeti1/pic068.jpg
Proof that lions really are just big cats.
tanz_serengeti1/pic072.jpg
I think this is a lion cub.
tanz_serengeti1/pic078.jpg
The most elusive of the big cats in the Serengeti - a leopard hanging out in a tree. Taken through binoculars!
tanz_serengeti1/pic079.jpg
I think this is a dikdik - a very small antelope.
tanz_serengeti1/pic080.jpg
A few impala.
tanz_serengeti1/pic082.jpg
We stopped for a while at the Serenera Lodge for some car maintenance, and Yasmin found a skull as big as she is. We think it's an elephant skull, but it might be something else.
tanz_serengeti1/pic084.jpg
This was our accomodation for our first night in the Serengeti. Yes, there are lions out there.
tanz_serengeti1/pic087.jpg
There were also quite a few rock hyraxes here.
tanz_serengeti1/pic092.jpg
Here's one close up.
tanz_serengeti1/pic088.jpg
Euphorbium Candelabra, according to the sign. (Or was it Euphorbia Candelabrum?)
tanz_serengeti1/pic093.jpg
Part of a long line of wildebeest (aka gnu) on their migration, on the way to the Ngorongoro crater.
tanz_serengeti1/pic094.jpg
These lions weren't far from the migration, but had presumably eaten recently.
tanz_serengeti1/pic097.jpg
tanz_serengeti1/pic096.jpg
The vultures weren't far away.
tanz_serengeti1/pic099.jpg
Zebra, and unusually one facing this way.
tanz_serengeti1/pic100.jpg
We're out of the Serengeti park here, and up the side of the crater. This is a view back where we came, from the spot where we had lunch on the second day.
tanz_serengeti1/pic101.jpg
Sarah didn't sleep very well by the look of it.
tanz_serengeti1/pic102.jpg
Chris and Yasmin with the same view.
