Tanzania 3: The Ngorongoro Crater

tanz_ngorongoro1/pan1.jpg
Our first view of the Ngorongoro crater, from the rim. The lake is about 500m down in the middle of the crater, and the far side is visible about 19km away. Notice how the weather is quite different in different parts of the crater.

Not long after we got into the crater, we came across three cheetahs. There was a gazelle nearby, but they didn't seem interested.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic118.jpg
The cheetahs really didn't seem to be bothered by a big car full of people.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic119.jpg
Almost close enough to scratch behind his ears!
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic124.jpg
A maribou stork, which is roughly five foot tall. They do look a bit silly standing there in their tailcoats.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic126.jpg
The crater has a lot of these striped horses.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic128.jpg
Including some small ones!
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic132.jpg
We nearly had to push the car out of the mud to see a couple of hippo backs.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic135.jpg
The trip wouldn't have been complete without a zebra crossing.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic136.jpg
There's that storm again.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic137.jpg
This hyena was rather tired. He kept lifting his head to look, but then dropped it again.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic138.jpg
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic142.jpg
Our first rhino, again through binoculars.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic146.jpg
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic149.jpg
We didn't expect warthogs to be so cute.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic150.jpg
Here's the daddy next to his little hole.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic151.jpg
We happened to see this pair of zebras, err, comparing stripes.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic152.jpg
In this bush is a lion with a zebra he's recently killed.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic153.jpg
More lions near the road...
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic154.jpg
...and their paw prints.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic156.jpg
Distant hippo with open mouth. Yasmin heard one of these break wind.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic158.jpg
Leftovers... Our guide thought this ex-buffalo had probably been dead for about 2 days.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic161.jpg
The lioness was struggling to get anything else edible from here.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic169.jpg
This pair of rhinos came close enough we didn't need the binoculars.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic170.jpg
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic172.jpg
We were ignoring this elephant as we were watching the rhinos.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic173.jpg
tanz_ngorongoro1/pan2.jpg
Another panoramic view, from half-way up the ridge to our hotel.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pan3.jpg
This was the view from the hotel balcony the next morning.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic194.jpg
This is a Masai village.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic201.jpg
Here are some of the people in the village.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic207.jpg
Some of the Masai warriors did some songs and dance for us.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic208.jpg
Some of the children, next to the traditional Masai house made of wood, mud, and other brown substances.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic215.jpg
A slightly contrived lesson in the primary school at the back.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic216.jpg
School is obviously very popular here.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic218.jpg
Not quite a cathedral...
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic221.jpg
We think this is the same pair as was on the road earlier.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic222.jpg
Must have been a romantic view up there.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic223.jpg
That's about how long it took.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic227.jpg
Yet another group of lions.
tanz_ngorongoro1/pic230.jpg
Here's the male.
